Murphy, Papelbon help Nationals hold on to beat Reds 10-9

  CINCINNATI (AP) — Daniel Murphy homered and drove in three runs, and Jonathan Papelbon pitched out of his own major jam in the ninth inning to preserve the Washington Nationals' 10-9 victory over the Cincinnati Reds Sunday.

Wilson Ramos also went deep for the Nationals, who overcame an early five-run deficit and then nearly squandered a five-run cushion of their own.

Murphy, Ramos and Bryce Harper each had three hits to help Washington salvage the finale of a three-game series, snapping the club's five-game losing streak in Cincinnati over the last two seasons.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Max Scherzer had 11 strikeouts in eight sharp innings, Wilson Ramos hit a three-run homer and the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-2 Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep.

  Ramos had three hits and four RBIs and Danny Espinosa also went deep for the Nationals, who have won four straight. Reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper missed his second straight game after bruising his right knee when hit by a pitch on Monday.

Orioles overcome 5 homers by Red Sox in 13-9 victory

  BALTIMORE (AP) — A wild, back-and-forth slugfest turned on a rare error by Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia, and the Baltimore Orioles overcame five Red Sox home runs in a 13-9 victory Wednesday night.

Matt Wieters had three RBIs for the Orioles, who reached a season high in runs without benefit of a homer. Hyun Soo Kim and Pedro Alvarez each had three hits, and Chris Davis drew four walks to help Baltimore secure its third win in 10 games.

Delle Done has 18, Pondexter 16 as Sky top Mystics 86-78

WASHINGTON (AP) — Elena Delle Donne scored 18 points and Cappie Pondexter added 16 to lead the Chicago Sky to an 86-78 win over the Washington Mystics Wednesday night.

Courtney Vandersloot, who led the WNBA in assists last season, added 10 points and eight assists off the bench in her second game back after missing three games with an ankle injury. Jamierra Faulkner, who has started since Vandersloot was injured, had seven assists as Chicago had 27 helpers on 32 baskets.

Hot-hitting Murphy homers, helps Nationals top Phillies 5-1

  PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Daniel Murphy hit one of four Washington home runs, Joe Ross allowed three hits in seven innings and the Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 Tuesday night for their third straight win.

NL MVP Bryce Harper missed the game, a day after he bruised his right knee when hit by a pitch.

Philadelphia lost its season-high fifth straight game and has scored just nine runs during the skid. At 26-26, the Phillies are at .500 for the first time since a 10-10 start.
