OperaDelaware cancels May production

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — OperaDelaware is canceling its May production and suspending big-budget productions next season.

The News Journal reports (http://delonline.us/1ctFwCx ) that the opera is facing declining ticket sales and corporate support.

General Director Brendan Cooke said Wednesday that the company pulled the $179,000 production of Verdi's "Il Trovatore" to avoid worsening its deficit. Refunds will be issued to nearly 650 patrons who already purchased tickets.

Baltimore museum, SCLC to hold Mandela tribute

BALTIMORE (AP) — The National Great Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore and the local chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference are planning a tribute to Nelson Mandela.

The organizations will host the event at the museum on Saturday. The former South African leader died last week at the age of 95.

A wax figure of Mandela and his ex-wife Madikizela-Mandela have been a part of the museum's collection since 1988. The museum was established in 1983.

'House of Cards' comes to Maryland State House

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The Maryland State House is providing the set for the Netflix show "House of Cards" this week.

The building was closed to the public on Monday, as actor Kevin Spacey and other actors filled the House of Delegates for filming. The building also is scheduled to be closed to the public on Tuesday. While the building is closed to the public, Maryland state government staff members are still working inside.

Professor Emeritus Ernest R. Satchell will be on hand at the “Juneteenth Celebration” at the Academy Art Museum in Easton this Saturday (June 15) at 11 a.m. for a ceramics demonstration.

The Juneteenth event takes place Friday and Saturday to mark an important African-American observance.  It commemorates the date—June 19, 1865—when slaves in Galveston, Texas first received word of the Emancipation Proclamation, which Abraham Lincoln has issued two and a half years earlier on January 1, 1863.
