Formerly a police officer, Winchester (1928-1961) pursued music as a hobby in Wilmington, Delaware.

Vibraphonist Lem Winchester was among the first African Americans to patrol the streets of Wilmington, Del., as a police officer in the late 1950s before becoming a full-time jazz musician.
