– The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is a co-winner of the “1890 University of the Year” award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.
UMES and North Carolina A&T State University shared the honor handed out by the APLU’s Council of 1890 Universities. The award recognizes best overall performance in teaching, research and innovation over the previous two academic years. UMES and NC A&T were among the top three in six of 14 categories, according to APLU.
Back in the 1950s, college athletes began filing for workers compensation and benefits because they were not only being injured on the playing field, but some were even dying.
Most college programs were scared of the idea of players being treated like state employees at the time.
