Del. State Police investigating attempted robbery

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Delaware State Police are investigating an attempted robbery of Mike's Food Mart in Dover.

Police say a suspect entered the store on 1378 South Governors Avenue at 2:26 p.m. Monday. The man was armed with a handgun and demanded money.

A 36-year-old male employee began fighting with the suspect and at one point was hit over the head with the gun. The suspect then fled without any cash or other items.

Frustrated Dover city workers push to form a union

DOVER, Del. (AP) — A group of Dover city workers is petitioning to form a union to fight a budget squeeze on municipal workers.

The News Journal (http://delonline.us/My5l92 ) reports a petition was filed last week to seek union rights for 78 city workers.

The group is called Dover United Employees. It would cover workers who are currently barred from joining one of two unions representing most of Dover's workers.

Delaware targets sale, possession of shark fins

DOVER, Del. (AP) — The state House has passed a bill outlawing the possession, sale, and distribution of shark fins in Delaware.

The bill, which passed unanimously on Thursday, is aimed at helping end the practice known as shark finning, in which a shark is caught, its fins cut off and the carcass dumped back in the water.

Supporters note that the practice of shark finning already is prohibited by federal law and state regulations, but the possession, sale and distribution of shark fins themselves is not.

Senate to vote powers of Delaware sheriffs

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Delaware's state Senate has passed legislation asserting that county sheriffs do not have police powers.

The bill, which was narrowly approved Thursday, passed the House overwhelmingly last month and now goes to the governor.

The bill is a response to recent actions by Sussex County sheriff Jeff Christopher, who argues that as "conservators of the peace" under Delaware's constitution of 1897, he and his deputies are law enforcement officers with the authority to arrest people and make traffic stops.
