One survivor rescued after abandoning sailboat

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) – Searchers have rescued one of two men who were washed overboard from their sailboat, and they have found the body of the other in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean hundreds of miles off the Virginia coast.
Coast Guard officials say Lochlin Reidy of Woodbridge, CT, was found about 4am about 400 miles east of Virginia Beach after a Coast Guard plane saw a strobe light in the ocean.
Reidy was taken aboard a tanker, one of four merchant vessels conducting the search since early Sunday. The body of Thomas Tighe of Patterson, NY, was discovered shortly before 6am and was recovered by the tanker's crew.
Three other survivors were found on the sailboat and they were airlifted to Massachusetts.
Survivors say that after experiencing 16 to 20 foot waves, Tighe activated the boat's emergency beacon and started preparing a life raft. A large wave then washed the two of them overboard.
